As the colonies erupt in protest and violence in its slow descent into outright revolution, Ethan Allen begins his new life in the New Hampshire Grants, what would eventually come to be the state he helps found: Vermont. However, his family’s secure new life, as well as the security and property of every settler of the Grants, is threatened by the political machinations of New York colony’s wealthy landlord class. Allen becomes the recognized leader and representative of the Grant’s settlers, and exhausts every legal option available to protect his neighbors and himself. Those options ultimately fail, and Allen is forced to lead his young community down a new and more violent path.

Back after a month from almost dying from Covid, we sit down to begin our discussion on the life of Ethan Allen, the controversial hero of the American Revolution and the Founding Father of the state of Vermont. From the foundations of the Puritan faith through the spiritual and political upheaval of the Great Awakening, we explore a snapshot of life in colonial New England through Allen’s eyes. We delve into his upbringing as a frontiersman in Connecticut, his intellectualism, and the legal troubles provoked by his youthful and untempered radicalism. During all this Derek struggles to regain his alcohol tolerance.

In this installment, the legendary King of Prussia thrusts his country into the Seven Years War, a fight for survival against three of the most powerful militaries in Europe, as well as the tragedies that accompanied the troubled ruler during this time. Then we finish off Frederick’s life, the last of his conquests, his lonely death in old age, and the enormous shadow he cast on world history, under which, to some extent, we still live today.
Featured in today’s episode is our Shitty Sipper Special, in which we try what will probably be an awful choice for our beer selection: Hard Mountain Dew.

This is it. After an ill-advised adventure into India, Alexander ends his expedition on an ignoble note and settles down in his new imperial capital of Babylon to plan reforms and expeditions that would, ultimately, never be. The life of the greatest conqueror of the ancient world is snuffed out, and with it the cohesion of his frail young empire.

In this installment of The Alexander Society, Alexander becomes fabulously rich by stealing from those he defeats, participates in some casual terraforming that's effects can still be seen today, kills an unreasonable amount of people brutally, and believes that he has become a god. Tim and Derek have a lot of drinking to do made even worse by St. Patty's day double or nothing.
